Karima Baloch will be laid to rest in Tump, Balochistan on Monday 25th January 2021, her brother Sameer Mehrab has said.
In a tweet Mr Mehrab said that Karima Baloch’s body will be flown from Canada to Karachi on Sunday. Her body will then be taken to her ancestral town Tump, Balochistan for burial.
Karima Baloch was a renowned Baloch leader and is considered the pioneer of women activism in Balochistan. She broke the taboos and took to street activism in an otherwise traditionalist society. In 2016, the leading British broadcasting corporation, BBC chose Karima as one of the world’s 100 most “inspirational and influential” women.
Karima Baloch’s dead body was found from Toronto, Canada on 21st December. Her family and Baloch political factions claim that she has been murdered, but the officials in the Toronto police department have termed her death as “non-criminal.”
Karima Baloch’s family members and political parties of Balochistan have rejected Toronto police’s initial report and have called for further investigation into the mysterious death.
Karima Baloch’s husband Hammal Haidar had said that that the family is not satisfied with the police investigation on Karima Baloch’s death, and demanded that the authorities must take into account all the circumstances surrounding her mysterious death.
Karima Baloch’s death engendered a massive uproar in Balochistan and abroad. Activist and rights groups organized protest throughout Balochistan and several major cities of Pakistan, including the federal capital Islamabad. Baloch National Movement held demonstrations in front of the Canadian embassy overseas, demanding that the Canadian authorities must thoroughly investigate the activist’s death.
Yesterday, on the completion of month since Karima Baloch’s dead body was found, a Twitter campaign trended as the top most trend in Pakistan. Thousands used #JusticeForKarimaBaloch in their tweets and demanded investigation into Karima’s death. The campaign was announced by Baloch Solidarity Committee, which has beenthe most active group in Balochistan in this regard. It has held nationwide protests and demonstrations, demanding an enquiry on Karima Baloch’s death.
