Amnesty International has called for an investigation into an airstrike on a drug rehabilitation centre in Kabul, Afghanistan, saying the attack should be examined as a possible war crime.

The rights organisation made the appeal in a newly published report examining the 16 March 2026 airstrike, which, according to the United Nations, killed at least 269 civilians.

Pakistan has maintained that the strike targeted what it described as “technical support infrastructure and ammunition storage facilities”. However, Taliban authorities have rejected that claim.

In its report, Amnesty International said it found no evidence to support the Pakistani military’s assertion that the Omid Rehabilitation and Treatment Centre was being used for storing weapons or ammunition, or for any other military purpose at the time of the attack.

The organisation stated that the airstrike on the rehabilitation facility may have violated international humanitarian law, which grants special protection to medical facilities and requires the protection of civilians during armed conflict.

Amnesty International said the findings raise serious concerns about compliance with the laws of war and called for a thorough, independent investigation into the incident and the circumstances surrounding the deaths of civilians.
