A prominent Pakistani journalist survived an assassination attempt in Karachi on Sunday.

According to reports, senior Pakistani journalist and SONU News bureau chief Shoaib Burney was injured when unidentified assailants opened fire at his vehicle on Rashid Minhas Road in Karachi.

He was rushed to a hospital where his condition was stated to be out of danger. However, the motive behind the incident is not known yet.

Mr. Burney served in various Pakistani mainstream news channels such as Geo News and Radio Pakistan and was then serving as the station chief of a private news channel.

The local journalist expressed concern over the incident and urged for the immediate arrest of the culprits.

It’s worth mentioning that Pakistan ranks 145 in the Press Freedom Index of Reporters Without Borders (RSF), a global media watchdog. RSF says that journalists in Pakistan have become prime targets of the country’s “deep state”, a euphemism for the all-powerful military and the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
