British Labour lawmaker John McDonnell urged ministers on Thursday to recognise Baloch demands for self-determination and take a more active role in addressing human rights concerns in Balochistan.
McDonnell, a former shadow chancellor, spoke by video link to the 12th International Balochistan Conference, organised by the Baloch National Movement (BNM) at the Geneva Press Club. He said Britain had a “special responsibility” because of its colonial history in the region.
“Britain must acknowledge its role because of its history of colonial rule in this region,” he said, adding that Baloch people should have the right to self-determination and basic protections of peace and justice.
McDonnell said he had provided political and diplomatic support in Britain to Baloch people affected by what he described as Pakistani repression. He also said Britain had responsibilities towards people seeking asylum and protection because their lives were at risk, arguing that new restrictions had made that more difficult.
He said Britain’s relationship with Pakistan made it difficult to influence government policy. Campaigners would nevertheless seek meetings with ministers to discuss immediate human rights concerns and a longer-term position on civil liberties and self-determination, he added.
