In a recent media statement, the Baloch National Movement said that a deadly wave of cholera has spread through the Pirkoh area of Dera Bugti due to the lack of clean drinking water. The organization appealed to the international community and NGOs to take notice of the issue and help tackle the cholera outbreak and water shortage in Dera Bugti.

BNM Welfare Secretary Zafar Baloch expressed concern over the situation in Pir-Koh in district Dera Bugti, Naseerabad and Sonmiyani Windar Lasbela districts of Balochistan.

The water shortage and the cholera outbreak caused by it have taken over a dozen lives and affected several others. Zafar Baloch said that a deadly disease is also killing cattle in large numbers in various cities in Balochistan. More than 44% of the Baloch population depends on livestock as an income source and the deadly outbreak of disease is killing the livestock in large numbers.

It is pertinent to mention that the water shortage in Dera Bugti has paved the way for a deadly outbreak of cholera, a particularly deadly disease caused by drinking contaminated water, which has killed over a dozen people in Pirkoh, Dera Bugti, where the situation is particularly severe. The disease is also spreading to the nearby areas and affecting people there.

The government of Balochistan took notice of the issue and ordered RS10 million to tackle the disease. The World Health Organization also sent a team to investigate and assess the situation and suggest possible steps to contain the spread of the disease.
