Lieutenant General Inayat Hussain has reportedly been appointed commander of the Pakistan Army’s XII Corps in Quetta, replacing Lieutenant General Rahat Naseem Ahmed Khan as part of a wider reshuffle of the military’s senior command structure.

Multiple Pakistani media outlets have reported the change, although the new corps postings had not been formally announced by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) at the time of reporting. Lieutenant General Rahat Naseem Ahmed Khan was still publicly identified as the Quetta Corps commander in official and media reports as recently as September.

XII Corps, headquartered in Quetta, is the Pakistan Army’s principal corps-level formation overseeing military operations and security responsibilities across Balochistan.

Lieutenant General Inayat Hussain is a senior Pakistan Army officer from the Guides Infantry and was commissioned through the 84th Pakistan Military Academy Long Course. Before his promotion to three-star rank, he served as Vice Chief of General Staff (Bravo) at General Headquarters. Dawn reported in May 2024 that he had been promoted to lieutenant general and appointed Chief of Logistics Staff at GHQ, replacing Lieutenant General Nauman Zakria.

His role as Chief of Logistics Staff was subsequently confirmed by institutional records from the National University of Sciences and Technology, which identified him in that position at a convocation in October 2024.

Hussain has also previously served in Balochistan. In 2021 and 2022, he was General Officer Commanding of the 44 Special Security Division, a formation responsible for security duties around Gwadar and strategic infrastructure associated with the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Dawn and the University of Gwadar both identified him as GOC 44 SSD during that period.

His reported return to Balochistan as XII Corps commander would place him at the head of one of the Pakistan Army’s most important field formations at a time of heightened armed activity and expanding military operations across the region.

The appointment is being reported as part of a broader reshuffle affecting several corps and GHQ positions. Pakistani media have reported new commanders for formations including the Peshawar, Lahore, Multan, Mangla and Quetta corps, alongside the promotion of a number of major generals to lieutenant general. However, several outlets reporting the reshuffle have themselves noted that not all of the appointments have yet been formally confirmed by ISPR.

Separate reports have also indicated changes within the Frontier Corps in Balochistan. Major General Zafar Iqbal has reportedly been appointed Inspector General of Frontier Corps South Balochistan, while Major General Ahmed Farhan has reportedly been assigned as the first Inspector General of Frontier Corps of the newly formed West Balochistan. These postings were reported in September by Pakistani media citing military sources, but no publicly available ISPR announcement confirming the appointments was found at the time of publication.

The reported changes in Balochistan’s senior military leadership come amid a marked escalation in armed conflict across the region during 2026.

An assessment published by Al Jazeera in September, citing data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS) and other monitoring organisations, reported that Balochistan had overtaken Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as Pakistan’s “most violence-affected province” for much of 2026, with the gap widening sharply from July.

The same assessment pointed to an expansion of armed activity into areas that had previously experienced relatively fewer attacks and highlighted growing pressure on major transport corridors linking Quetta with Karachi, Taftan and other parts of the region.

Baloch pro-independence armed groups, particularly the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF), have increased attacks in recent years against Pakistani military personnel, police, government installations, transport networks and infrastructure linked to state and economic projects. Al Jazeera, citing conflict-monitoring data, reported earlier this year that armed attacks in Balochistan had already increased substantially during 2025 and continued to intensify in 2026.

A notable feature of the recent escalation has been the targeting of strategic roads, railway links and other transport infrastructure, including routes connected to trade with Iran and CPEC-related activity. Analysts cited by Al Jazeera have said armed groups appear to be attempting to expand their operational reach and disrupt corridors carrying both military and economic significance.

Hussain’s reported appointment would therefore mark a return to Balochistan for an officer who previously commanded the Gwadar-based 44 Special Security Division, but this time with responsibility for the wider XII Corps command amid a substantially more challenging security environment.
