According to a report, water scarcity has become the biggest problem in several districts, with groundwater levels falling with each passing day, leading to water shortage in across Balochistan.

As per a report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN),, most of the lush green pastures in Balochistan have turned into deserts in the last two decades due to lack of water.

Dr Faiz Kakar, former head of the IUCN Balochistan chapter, said that if proper steps were not taken to control the groundwater level, Quetta could turn into a desert.

Water level in Quetta, Pishin, Qilla Abdullah, Kalat, Mastung, Khuzdar, Loralai and other districts of Balochistan is declining rapidly, the report said. Some experts believe that the construction of dams will help control the falling water level.

Due to the shortage, the residents of Balochistan’s Dera Bugti and Kohlu districts have no other choice but to drink contaminated water. Which has led to the spread of diarrheas among children. Two people, including a woman have been killed in past few days.

According to sources, medicines have been provided to the affected people but the shortage of clean water in the district is causing severe distress to residents.
