The representative for the Baloch Women’s Forum, a non-profit organization advocating for women’s rights in Balochistan, resented the government’s inability to arrest and convict the murderer of Baloch journalist Shaheena Baloch.

In a recent media statement, the Baloch Women’s Forum resented that the authorities have failed to track down and convict Ms Baloch’s murderer, Mehrab Khan Gichki. His belonging to an influential family has sheltered him from the legal repercussions of his crime, the spokesperson said.

Shaheena Baloch was a Baloch journalist, an artist, the editor of a local magazine and a human rights activist from Balochistan. She was allegedly killed by her husband, Mehrab Gichki, in the name of honour in Turbat, Balochistan. According to the sources, Gichki shot her two times, drove her to the hospital, left her there in a critical condition and fled the scene. The relevant authorities have failed to track him down.

The statement further said that the government’s inaction in the arrest and conviction of the culprit is an additional source of alarm for the victim’s family. The government must effectively legislate to put an end to the crimes against women, it read.

In the meantime, the Baloch Rights Council announced a demonstration and a hunger strike against the murder of Shaheena Baloch in Karachi on October 10th.
