Two police head constables, Ahmed Lashari and Malik Bugti, were killed when unidentified armed men opened fire on a police patrol near Bedar Bridge in the Dera Murad Jamali area of Balochistan’s Naseerabad district on Saturday.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Ghulam Sarwar Mengal confirmed the incident, saying the officers were travelling on motorcycles when they came under attack. The attackers also took their official weapons, he added.
Separately, armed men returned to the Panki police post in Gulistan, Killa Abdullah district on Friday, and demolished the remaining structure with an excavator, according to police sources.
Police sources said part of the four-room building had been demolished during an earlier attack, but the work stopped when the excavator ran out of fuel. The armed men returned and completed the demolition, they added.
A police official in Quetta said police and Pakistani forces launched an operation after receiving information about the incident, adding that the armed men fled towards Panjpai.
The attacks come amid a series of security incidents in Balochistan, including recent abductions of police personnel and government officials.
On Friday, armed men abducted 20 police trainees after intercepting their passenger van in Mastung’s Gurgina area while they were returning home on weekly leave from the Kalat Recruit Training Centre, according to police sources.
The abducted trainees were former Levies personnel who had joined the police following the merger of the two forces. A list circulated to the media identified eight as residents of Kharan, five from Nushki, four from Chagai and three from Washuk.
A day earlier, Rakhshan Division Commissioner Asadullah Kakar and his driver were reportedly abducted during a road blockade in the Barshonki area of the Kharan–Quetta highway while travelling from Quetta towards Kharan. Their whereabouts remained unknown at the time of reporting.
Kharan’s deputy commissioner and an additional sessions judge from Panjgur were also reportedly abducted in separate incidents on September 20 and subsequently released.
No group had claimed responsibility for Saturday’s attack in Naseerabad or the demolition of the police post at the time of publication.
