Karachi Police has claimed that it has killed a gang leader known as Ghaffar Zikri and his accomplice Chota Zahid on Thursday morning.

The three-year-old son of Ghaffar Zikri was also killed in the shootout.

Police officials claimed that they and other law enforcement agencies carried out the operation in Lyari’s Ali Mohmmad Mohalla on Thursday morning after getting an intelligence tip-off.

According to media reports, two police officers were also injured, with at least one being in critical condition.

In the operation that lasted for nearly an hour hand grenades and other heavy weapons were used by both sides.

Contingents of police and Rangers had locked down the area following the shootout. Search operations were launched in nearby areas.

According to the post-mortem examination of the bodies, which were sent to the Civil Hospital, Ghaffar was shot six times while his son and accomplice received one bullet wound each, which proved to be fatal.

Ghaffar was considered leader of his armed group in Lyari. There were dozens of cases registered against him. He had allegedly gone into hiding after the Karachi cleanup operation was launched.

Last year, his younger brother, Aftab Zikri, had also been killed in a shootout with the police.
