A protest camp organised by the Voice for Baloch Missing Persons (VBMP) outside the Quetta Press Club continued for the 6,203rd day on Tuesday, with the group renewing calls for an end to enforced disappearances and the recovery of all missing persons.
The VBMP said enforced disappearances violated human rights and constitutional guarantees, and urged the authorities to take effective measures to end the practice.
The group also criticised the life sentences handed to Baloch rights activist Dr Mahrang and Sibghatullah Shahji, saying the proceedings had failed to meet constitutional and legal requirements and were “contrary to the spirit of Pakistan’s Constitution and law”.
It said every citizen was entitled to a fair hearing, legal representation and transparent judicial proceedings under the Constitution.
The VBMP said the rule of law required proceedings against any individual to follow due process and the principles of justice, adding that disregarding constitutional safeguards amounted to “weakening justice, human rights and democratic values”.
