The torrential monsoon rains and the attendant flash floods have destroyed thousands of schools in different areas of Balochistan, kicking back years of development.

The provincial education department revealed in a recent report that over 2859 schools were affected by the recent flooding in Balochistan. At least 321 schools were destroyed in district Lasbela alone, the highest in Balochistan.

The heavy rains and the subsequent raging waters inundated hundreds of villages in Balochistan, destroying everything in their wake, including hundreds of kilometres of roads, numerous bridges, and tens of thousands of houses. Over a million are internally displaced due to the floods, waiting for help that may never come.

The education department said over 380,000 students were enrolled in the affected schools. The department is yet to appraise the financial damage the schools have sustained.

Some areas of Balochistan were among the worst hit by the recent rains and flooding. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has estimated that 1.3 million people were internally displaced, and over 185,000 houses were destroyed in the floods.

The PDMA further added that the 35 districts of Balochistan were affected by the flooding to various degrees. The official death toll in various rain-related incidents is 278, but the actual number is expected to be much higher.

The majority of the people affected by the floods are still waiting for help. Furthermore, the authorities are yet to repair the damaged rail and road network that has halted transportation in and out of Balochistan.
