The United States has issued a travel advisory for Pakistan, warning its citizens of security risks due to “terrorism” and potential armed conflict. The advisory specifically designates Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) as high-risk areas, urging travelers to avoid these regions due to frequent attacks.

According to the advisory, “terrorist” groups remain active in various parts of the country, frequently targeting military and police personnel as well as civilians. The advisory notes that markets, government buildings, and public spaces have been attacked in the past, with little or no warning. U.S. diplomatic personnel and facilities have also been targeted in previous incidents.

Hinting at the ongoing mass protests against enforced disappearances in Balochistan, the U.S. government has also expressed concerns over restrictions on freedom of expression in Pakistan. It warns that local laws prohibit public protests without prior approval, and U.S. citizens have been detained for participating in demonstrations or posting content critical of the Pakistani government and military on social media. Internet and mobile services, the advisory states, are frequently disrupted, especially during protests or security operations.

Additionally, the advisory highlights travel restrictions for U.S. government personnel in Pakistan, noting that officials require special authorization to visit most areas outside of Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. In certain regions, U.S. personnel must use armored vehicles and armed escorts for both official and personal travel. The U.S. consulate in Peshawar does not provide consular services, while those in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore offer only limited assistance, particularly to dual U.S.-Pakistani citizens who are considered exclusively Pakistani under local law.

The travel advisory comes amid ongoing security concerns in Pakistan, where violence linked to armed groups remains a persistent issue. The U.S. government has advised its citizens to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated on the security situation before visiting Pakistan.
