Heavy rains continue to wreak havoc in Balochistan, claiming 31 lives and injuring over 40 individuals. The region is confronting widespread destruction as homes, crops, infrastructure, and the livestock sector suffer severe damage due to the relentless downpours that have persisted since the winter months.

According to the report by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Balochistan’s last monsoon season concluded on August 25 of the previous year. However, winter rains began in November and have persisted, causing rain-related incidents, such as house collapses, flash floods, and lightning strikes, which have resulted in 31 casualties.

The fatalities include 12 men, 10 women, and 9 children. The Khuzdar district has seen the highest number of casualties, with nine reported. In addition to the tragic loss of life, over 40 individuals have been injured in these rain-related incidents.

The heavy rainfall has caused extensive damage across various sectors in Balochistan. Six houses have been completely destroyed, while 15 others have sustained partial damage. The livestock sector has also been adversely affected, with 30 animals reported dead. Agricultural losses include 50 acres of wheat crops washed away and 30 gardens destroyed. Infrastructure damage include five roads, two highways, and one bridge affected by the heavy rains.

The PDMA has issued an alert for another strong westerly system in Balochistan, which could bring continuous heavy rain, hail, and dust storms to several areas. Heavy rain is anticipated in Khuzdar, Loralai, Musakhel, Sherani, Makran, Lasbela, the Koh-i-Suleiman range, Zhob, Barkhan, Kohlu, Turbat, Chaghi, and other Pakistan-Iran border areas. The PDMA cautions that heavy rains may lead to flooding and additional damage to roads.

In response to the potential flood risk, the PDMA has directed all deputy commissioners to remain vigilant for possible flood situations.
