The Leishmania epidemic that started in the Kalat district of Balochistan has become out of control, affecting people of different ages. Due to the increase in affected victims, the injections have fallen short. The affected citizens demand more injections as demand has exceeded the supply.

According to Dr. Nasrullah, the health officer of the district, more than 600 Leishmaniasis patients have been registered. Talking to the media he mentioned, that there has been a rapid spread of sand fly-borne epidemic in the region following last year’s flood situation.

Around 70 patients were administered 20 to 30 injections each, and their condition was brought under control, after which they were discharged, he said.

The UNICEF and WHO collaborated with us and provided 2500 injections, he said.

Dr. Nasrullah further added that since the number of affected individuals is quite high, this quantity of injections is insufficient. Each patient requires 20 to 30 injections per year to keep the disease under control. We have therefore appealed to the health department and donors to assist us in preventing the further spread of measles, lest the disease should spread to other district, he said.
