A female polio vaccinator injured in an attack in Quetta, the capital city of Balochistan on Wednesday

According to details received by The Balochistan Post, unidentified gunmen attacked a polio team in Bhosa Mandi area of Quetta city on Wednesday, left a female polio vaccinator critically injured.

The injured was taken to the civil hospital Quetta, who has been identified as, Bibi Ghazala.

The attackers managed to flee the site of the attack.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility for the violence, but in the past responsibilities of such attacks have been claimed by religious militant groups.

Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria are the only countries in the world where polio is endemic, according to the World Health Organization.

Attacks on polio teams are not uncommon in Pakistan. Militants perceive the immunization effort as part of a Western plot to sterilize Pakistani children.
