The leader of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM), Manzoor Pashteen, has accused the Pakistani state of obstructing efforts to establish peace in Kurram. He claims a Pashtun Jirga tasked with facilitating reconciliation was repeatedly blocked by authorities.
Pashteen said the Jirga, which included elders, religious scholars, and influential community leaders, was prevented from entering Kurram multiple times. “We have made three consecutive attempts to enter Kurram to work towards peace, but Pakistani forces stopped us each time,” he said.
The Jirga’s aim was to facilitate reconciliation and address tensions in Kurram using traditional practices. However, Pashteen alleged that state authorities imposed restrictions to hinder their efforts.
In a message to the people of Kurram, Pashteen expressed solidarity and shared his commitment to the region. “The suffering of Kurram is our suffering,” he said. “We have made efforts for peace there, but you all are aware of the oppressive tactics of the state, including blockades and restrictions.”
Despite the challenges, Pashteen reaffirmed the PTM’s dedication to pursuing peace. “We remain determined to strive for peace in Kurram. We will seek alternative routes and continue our efforts for the well-being of our people,” he added.
