Balochistan, a province of Pakistan facing significant educational and technological challenges, has unfortunately lagged behind in these critical fields. Both the provincial and federal governments appear to disregard the outdated education system prevalent in the region. Students, for the most part, remain unaware of educational opportunities, including those in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and entrepreneurship.

Based on self-observations and research conducted by the Mechanism for Rational Change (MRC), it has been found that only three out of a hundred students in Kalat have a familiarity with science and mathematics knowledge. The absence of adequate and up-to-date educational institutions further impedes the development of a high-quality educational system. Approximately five thousand schools in the region lack basic facilities such as proper roofing and water supply, and reports suggest the presence of many ghost teachers.

Despite these challenges, student organizations and forums like the Kalat Student Forum (KSF) are actively engaged in various self-help campaigns to promote education. They strive to raise awareness about provincial, national, and international opportunities for Baloch students who may not have even ventured outside their homes.

Numerous student forums and organizations are aiding Baloch students in pursuing higher education beyond their cities and the province. However, persistent challenges related to facilities, funding, and financial crises continue to contribute to the province’s remarkably low literacy rate of 44 percent.

It is, therefore, imperative for the government to introduce necessary reforms to the educational system. Every segment of society—students, authorities, and the government—must play a role in bringing enlightenment to the province. I earnestly call upon both governmental and non-governmental entities to support knowledge-promoting forums and encourage everyone to join hands in illuminating Balochistan with the beacon of education.
