A Baloch prisoner died a mysterious death in custody in Karachi’s Landhi Jail, the sources have said. The young man was detained from Karachi’s Old City area on charges of drug trafficking.

The deceased prisoner, identified as Sabir Baloch, was reportedly detained by the Napier police in Karachi in August. The police frisked the young man when they thought he behaved suspiciously. They found 60 grams of the heroine in his pockets. He was booked under article 216/22 of the Pakistan Penal Code for possession of narcotics.

Sabir Baloch was handed over to the police for judicial remand, and his case was underway at the local session court when he was in prison.

His family said the police had called and informed them Sabir had died due to a drug “overdose.” They were directed to collect his dead body from Karachi’s Jinnah Hospital.

Superintendent Landhi District Jail, Muhammad Arshad, has said that Sabir Baloch was a heavy drug user. He said that Sabir was admitted to the hospital for treatment when he passed away.

He said that the police has also ordered an autopsy of the disease to confirm that he died of a drug overdose.
