Iranian experts have written a letter to the UN and other countries, warning them that Iran-China defense agreement can threaten world peace.

The faction in opposition of the 25-year Iran-China defense agreement wrote an open letter to the United Nations and the world countries, including India, Australia, Japan, Britain and France, alleging that the said agreement threatens the regional and world peace.

According to the media reports, 74 social and political experts unanimously expressed alarm in an open letter that the defense agreement between Tehran and Beijing threatens global peace and stability. They said that the agreement aims to entrench China’s authoritative communist regime and empower Iran’s clerical government.

The experts included, among several others, famed lawmaker Ghaini Fazil, rights activists Ayatullah Masoomi and Hashmatullah Tibrzadi, and filmmaker Mohammad Noori.

The said agreement was proposed to the Iranian cabinet by the President Hassan Rouhani earlier in June. The cabinet endorsed the agreement and the, under Rouhani’s orders, the Foreign Minister Mohammad Jawad Zareef officiated it. Before the agreement, Zareef also visited China to set up the deal with the Chinese officials.

Under the agreement, Iran and China will reportedly sign an arms deal, and will mutually cooperate to reap its benefits. This, the experts say, can trigger a new race for the manufacturing and acquisition of weapons and arms, threatening the regional peace and stability. China is vying with the United States for global dominance, whereas Iran has also had its fair share of disagreements and skirmishes with the US. The mutual bitterness towards the US – the world leader – can cause instability to overspill the Iranian borders and spread to the rest of the world.

The agreement will also enhance the global influence of China – known for its ‘debt-trap diplomacy’ and negligence of human rights – and Iran – notorious for supporting Islamist armed organizations like Hizbollah.

The letter further read that the Iran-China agreement can influence the global order and lead to an armed confrontation between the democratic and authoritative countries of the world.

The experts further said that the Chinese Silk Road will also pave the way for Iran to meddle with the other countries of the region.

The letter appealed to the UN secretary-general to help the Iranian masses in bringing a “non-violent democratic change” in Iran.
