A 25-year-old farmer, Barkat Baloch, son of Azeem, from Gresha in Khuzdar district, has died from injuries sustained in an attack by an armed group described as a “death squad” by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC).
The term “death squads” is used by Baloch political parties and rights groups for armed groups allegedly backed by the state and involved in targeting Baloch activists and nationalists.
According to the BYC statement, Barkat was travelling with his friend Alam Khan, son of Dad Bakhsh, to attend a wedding on September 17, 2026, when they were fired upon in Sohrdap, Gresha. Alam Khan was killed in the attack, while Barkat sustained critical injuries.
Barkat was taken to Civil Trauma Hospital in Karachi, where the BYC said he remained under treatment for 12 days. He died from his injuries on September 28.
The organisation said two families had now lost loved ones, while their children had been left with “a loss that cannot be repaired”.
The BYC said the killing of Alam Khan and the subsequent death of Barkat could not be viewed as isolated incidents. It described them as part of a “deeply alarming pattern of targeted killings and violence against Baloch civilians”, alongside continuing enforced disappearances and other serious human rights violations in Balochistan.
The organisation called on national and international human rights organisations, the United Nations and the global human rights community to “break their silence and take immediate action”.
It said the escalating human rights crisis in Balochistan demanded independent and impartial investigations, accountability for those responsible and effective protection of Baloch civilians.
“The international community must not allow enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and targeted violence to continue with impunity,” the statement said.
