A former Afgan interpreter to US Army was shot dead by unidentified armed men in Washington DC late at night on July 3.

According to reports, Nusrat Ahmad Yar, a former US Army interpreter, was shot and killed while he was serving as a driver of a transport company Lyft in the northeast part of Washington DC.

Soon after the incident, police launched an investigation into the matter.

According to police, DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services reached the spot and shifted the injured to a local hospital for treatment. All efforts to save his life failed and the victim, Nusrat Ahmed Yar, was declared dead.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Police Department appealed for the public’s help in identifying the suspects involved in the murder.

The police department has offered a $25,000 reward for information or assistance leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the incident.

According to preliminary information, four people have been seen fleeing from the spot in a video of a surveillance camera installed at the spot.

In the video footage, three of them were wearing dark-colored clothes while one was wearing a white hood. “You killed him, he was about to leave,” a man can be heard saying in the video.

Matthew Butler, a retired US Army Lt. Col with whom Nusrat Ahmed Yar served as an interpreter during the US war in Afganistan has accused Afgan Taliban behind the killing.

Matthew Butler told local media that Nusrat’s family had to leave Afghanistan because they were considered a target by the Taliban for helping the US military.

Ahmad Yar was buried at the All Muslim Association of America cemetery in Virginia, where members of the Afghan community living in the Washington metro area attended his funeral.

Who was Nusrath Ahmed yar?

31 years old Nusrat Ahmed Yar, resident of a small village near Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan and father of four children served as an interpreter US Army during the war in Afghanistan, the longest war in the history of the US Army.

He moved to the United States with his family after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021. Initially, he lived in Philadelphia. However, he had an accident and was robbed at gunpoint there, after which he moved to Virginia.

Ahmad Yar and his wife were living with four children in Virginia, a state adjacent to Washington DC.

Rahim Amini, a close friend of Nusrat Ahmed Yar, told the media that Nusrat was happy that he got a new car that he could drive and support his family.

Rahim Amini said that Ahmed Yar’s wife had asked him to stay at home but he replied that he has to pay the rent and he doesn’t have money for it.
