The consistent heavy rainfall in different parts of Balochistan in the past couple of days have resulted in heavy floods throughout the region, killing at least 9 people. In different cities, roads were damaged and drainage cunettes overflew, impeding transportation and affecting the day-to-day commutes of the people. The Nari River in Bolan overspilt and gas pipelines of various districts were destroyed.

According to the details, at least 9 people have died as a result of heavy flooding or other flood-related incidents in Dera Bugti, Jafferabad, Khuzdar and few other areas of Balochistan. Floods washed away five people in Bolan, of whom 2 were saved and 3 drowned. According to the Provisional Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), at least 150 houses have been severely struck by the floods. The water level in Mirani Dam has ascended to 244, prompting the authorities to open the spillways and dispose of the extra water that reportedly jeopardized Dam’s ability to withstand high pressures. Agriculture also received a critical blow due to the heavy floods and the cattle and other possessions of the locals were swept away.

The provincial capital, Quetta, was also gravely struck by the floods. In Sariyab, the sewers overflew, inundating streets and roads with water and sewage. The transport system was temporarily impaired and civilians faced countless hurdles in their daily affairs. In different parts of Balochistan, gas pipelines were destroyed and electric grids were shut, resulting in blackouts in many major cities. Many rural areas reported power outage during the heavy rainfall.

The provincial authorities are reportedly working to ameliorate the fallout of the floods throughout Balochistan. Rescue operations are in full swing in Jhal Magsi and the affected areas of Khuzdar are being restored and reconditioned. The rescue forces reportedly rescued scores of tourists and picnickers from Moola Chotok, Khuzdar, who were stuck in there for at least 48 hours. The rescue forces are also distributing eatables, tents and other essentials among the affected.

Talking to newsmen during his visit to Dera Murad Jamali, Zia Langove, the Home Minister of Balochistan, said that heavy machinery has been sent to flood-affected areas to repair the damaged roads and bridges. He also said that the alternative arrangements are underway to restore traffic as the highways have been damaged by the floods. Langove claimed that the Provincial Disaster Management Authority is fully equipped and prepared to deal with the monsoon rains and the situations they will engender.

Chief Minister of Balochistan, Jam Kamal Khan, Yar Muhammad Rind and few other members of the Balochistan Awami Party also visited the flood-affected areas of Harnai district. During his visit, CM assured the affectees that the government will take the necessary actions to minimize their suffering. He also announced the construction of bridges to save the highways from floods in future.

The National Meteorological Department has forecasted thunderous rains for many districts of Balochistan, including Zhob, Loralai, Pishin, Harnai, and mild rains for Kech, Gwadar, Pangjur and few other areas.
