Students at Turbat University, located in Balochistan’s Kech district, have expressed concerns over the frequent presence of security forces within their institution.
According to student accounts provided to The Balochistan Post, the presence of security forces is not limited to routine visits. They suggest that these visits are often accompanied by lectures, which students perceive as pushing a certain patriotic narrative. In addition, on certain occasions, students residing in university hostels have reportedly been invited to the Frontier Corps (FC) camp for events, including sports activities.
Furthermore, students allege repercussions for not participating in these military-organized events. Specifically, they fear such non-participation could lead to profiling. They also claim instances of being forcefully involved in events like candlelight walks following certain regional incidents..
Students contend that, internationally, the university ethos emphasizes academic freedom and intellectual development. Yet, at Turbat University, they argue that the presence of security forces hampers this environment, leading to psychological stress.
Additional concerns revolve around the university’s administration. Students allege that the administration appears more accommodating toward military officers than in preserving the institution’s academic atmosphere.
It’s worth noting that allegations regarding security forces’ presence in educational institutions in Balochistan are not confined to Turbat University. Previous instances have indicated similar issues at other institutions, including the University of Balochistan. There have also been past concerns about student activities being restricted, while certain NGOs, believed to be backed by the military, reportedly carry out comparable activities.
