The parliamentary elections in southern Kandahar province of Afghanistan have been postponed after the deadly incident left the provincial Police Chief Gen. Abdul Raziq and the provincial Intelligence Chief Gen. Abdul Momin Hussain Khel dead, Khaama News reported.

According to Khaama News, the Office of the Afghan President, ARG Palace, in a statement said a special meeting of the National Security Council was organized today based on the recommendation of the Independent Election Commission to discuss the elections.

The statement further added that the meeting reviewed the recommendations of the Kandahar tribes to the Independent Election Commission for the postponement of the elections due to the recent incident.

The meeting decided to postpone the elections in this province for a week considering the recommendations of the Kandahar tribes, the statement added.

This comes as Kandahar Police Chief Gen. Abdul Raziq and the Kandahar Intelligence Chief Gen. Abdul Momin Hussain Khel lost their lives in an attack on Thursday while the governor of the province sustained injuries.

In the meantime, Gen. Raziq was given the Major General rank while Gen. Hussain Khel was given the Lieutenant General rank based on the recommendations of the Ministry of Interior and the National Directorate of Security and approval of President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani.

At least three people have been arrested in connection to yesterday’s deadly incident.

Afghanistan’s Ministry of Interior (MoI) in a short statement confirmed that three suspects have been identified and arrested in connection to the incident.

The statement further added that the detained individuals are in the custody of the security forces and an investigation is underway.
