Residents face severe water shortage since weeks
According to The Balochistan Post correspondent, water shortage has alarmed the citizens for couple of weeks now. The prices of water tanks have also dramatically increased.
Masjid Road, Patel Road, Brewery Road, A-1 City, Faqeer Muhammad Road, Sariab Road, Qambrani Road, Killi Habib Langoabad, Alamdar Road, Kasi Road and surrounding areas are in dire need of water.
Talking with the TBP, a resident of A-1 city said that Tanker Mafia, private water suppliers, are looting us with unchecked prices, and the water supplied is also unhealthy for drinking.
“A tanker which was sold for 800 rupees is now being sold for two to three thousand”, said the resident.
Another resident told TBP that the government departments have failed to supply water to the dwellers, as a result, they are forced to buy expensive tanks.
According to experts, as groundwater is depleting at a rapid pace, by 2025 there will be no water in Quetta and the people will have to shift to other cities.
However, The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a 100-million-U.S.-dollar loan on Monday to improve irrigation infrastructure and water resource management in Balochistan.
According to the statement, a dam able to hold 36 million cubic meters of water, 276 km of irrigation channels and drainage canals will be constructed or upgraded, adding that about 16,592 hectares of land will be added or improved for irrigation in the province.
A water resources information system will also be established that will use advanced technology such as satellite and remote sensing to do river basin modelling and identify degraded land for rehabilitation, the statement added.
