More than 35 students at the Quetta campus of the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) have been expelled for not standing or singing during the Pakistani national anthem, according to a Quetta-based human rights lawyer.
Imran Baloch said in a social media post that the students did not stand during a ceremony in which the anthem was played, after which they were expelled from the university.
He said the affected students included both Baloch and non-Baloch students.
He added that the university administration had asked the students’ parents to submit special affidavits for their readmission, including explanations as to why the students did not stand during the anthem.
NUST had not issued an official statement on the matter at the time of publication.
