A subdued atmosphere was reported across much of Balochistan on 14 August, as markets and commercial centres remained closed in several areas, public activity was noticeably reduced, and armed attacks were reported in Quetta, Bolan and Harnai.
According to reports, most shops in major commercial areas and markets remained shut across Balochistan, including in Quetta. Traffic on key roads and thoroughfares was significantly lighter than usual, while public transport activity appeared limited. Reports from several districts and towns similarly indicated reduced commercial activity and lower levels of public movement.
Residents in a number of areas reportedly remained indoors, while security was tightened around Pakistani forces’ camps, government offices and other sensitive installations. Additional personnel were deployed at several locations and movement around key sites was closely monitored.
Despite the generally muted atmosphere, very limited ceremonies were held at selected locations in Quetta and other parts of Balochistan by government institutions and Pakistani forces.
Meanwhile, a number of security-related incidents were reported in different parts of the region.
According to local sources, unidentified individuals fired multiple rockets and grenades at a 14 August ceremony in Quetta’s Zarghoon Colony. Sources said approximately eight explosions were heard during the attack.
The ceremony was reportedly attended by a large number of personnel from the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) and the Frontier Corps (FC). However, no official confirmation of casualties or injuries was immediately available.
In Bolan district, an explosion was reported near the Kumbri Bridge on the N-65 highway. Following the blast, traffic on the highway was temporarily suspended. Reports also indicated that a police checkpoint in Harnai was destroyed with explosive materials. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the incidents.
Meanwhile, in Turbat, the main city of Kech district, an IED reportedly targeted Pakistani military vehicles near Shaheed Fida Chowk. Following the incident, a large number of FC and Police personnel subsequently completely cordoned off the area.
Separately, the chairman of the Baloch National Movement (BNM), Dr Naseem Baloch, issued a statement marking 14 August in which he criticised the creation of Pakistan and linked the date to what he described as the loss of Balochistan’s independence.
Dr Naseem Baloch said the regions that now constitute Pakistan had not witnessed a significant political movement for the country’s creation and argued that Pakistan emerged as a result of British colonial policy, the politics of religious representation, and political compromises made during the partition of India.
He said young Baloch should not view the creation of Pakistan solely through the actions of the Muslim League or Britain, arguing that the Indian National Congress also shared responsibility for the partition because it ultimately failed to resist the division of India.
The BNM chairman further stated that the partition brought widespread destruction across the region, dividing Punjab and Bengal, causing mass killings and displacing millions of people. He argued that the use of religion as the basis for state formation had left lasting consequences for South Asian politics.
Referring to Balochistan, Dr Naseem Baloch claimed that the Baloch nation had paid the highest price for the partition. He said that, following historical agreements between Britain and Balochistan and a long period of Baloch political struggle, Balochistan became independent on 11 August 1947. According to him, the Baloch leadership sought relations with neighbouring states on the basis of equality and mutual agreements, but that possibility ended when Pakistan occupied Balochistan on 27 March 1948.
He added that 14 August and 27 March should be viewed as interconnected dates, arguing that the events that followed the creation of Pakistan ultimately led to the loss of Balochistan’s independence.
The statements came as much of Balochistan observed 14 August with reduced public activity, market closures and heightened security measures across several districts.
