Mullah Kamal Salahzai, a prominent and influential Baloch figure known for his role in mediating tribal peace and reconciliation, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Iranshahr area of Western (Iran-administrated) Balochistan on Sunday.
According to reports, Salahzai, a resident of Sarbaz’s Gernag area, was traveling with his son and driver in a private car near Moqaddas Defa Square when gunmen opened fire. He died on the spot, while his son sustained injuries. One of his companions escaped unharmed.
Mullah Kamal Salahzai was regarded as a key local figure who had resisted the Iranian government between 1981 and 2000, reportedly engaging in several armed clashes with Iranian forces. Iranian authorities had allegedly made multiple attempts on his life over the years, and even after his arrest and subsequent release, he continued to face attacks.
On November 3, 1999, Iranian military forces launched a major operation in Gernag village, Sarbaz, reportedly aimed at suppressing locals and capturing Salahzai. He is said to have led strong resistance during the assault, resulting in heavy casualties among Iranian troops.
In a statement, Jaish ul-Adl, an armed group fighting against Iran, expressed condolences over his killing and alleged that Iran was behind the assassination due to Salahzai’s opposition to the Iranian regime.
Iranian authorities have not yet issued any statement regarding the incident.
