At least 11 people, including nine coal mine workers died of suffocation due to a gas leakage at a coal mine site near Quetta, the capital of Balochistan on Monday.

According to Chief Mines Inspector Quetta Abdul Ghani Baloch, 11 people died of suffocation due to the release of poisonous gas in a coal mine in Sanjadi area.

He said that the deceased included nine labourers, a contractor and a mine manager, adding that the deceased belonged to Swat area of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

According to the Chief Mines Inspector, the bodies will be sent to their native places.

This is the third major accident in Balochistan’s coal mines this year in which several miners have lost their lives.

Dozens of coal mining projects are working in Balochistan, in which thousands of workers from Balochistan and other cities have been victims of these accidents at different occasions. Labor unions working in these coal mines, and organizations working to protect the rights of workers, attribute these accidents to poor facilities and substandard materials provided to the workers.
