At least two workers lost their lives in an accident at a coal mine site in the Harnai district of Balochistan on Wednesday.
According to reports, two miners died of suffocation due to gas filling in a coal mine in Shahrag area of the Harnai district. This incident marks the second such occurrence in Balochistan this month, with three miners having lost their lives. Earlier in March, a total of 17 miners were killed in accidents.
In March, 18 miners were trapped inside a coal mine following an explosion in the Zardalo coal mine in the Harnai district of Balochistan.
Numerous coal mining projects are operational in Balochistan, where thousands of workers from Balochistan and other cities have fallen victim to these accidents at various times.
Labour unions and organizations advocating for workers’ rights attribute these accidents to poor facilities and substandard materials provided to the workers. Last year, 69 miners were killed and 29 were injured in 51 accidents in Balochistan’s coal mines. Officials from the Department of Minerals report that in the coal mines of Mach, Dukki, Shahrag, Chamalang, and Quetta areas of Balochistan, most deaths were caused by explosions resulting from methane gas filling.
