The United States National Security Advisor has confirmed that Biden administration will review the so-called “peace deal” with Taliban, which the former US President Trump entered into.

The US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan while speaking with his Afghan counterpart Hamdullah Mohib has made it clear that the Biden administration intends to review the deal with the Taliban.

In a media release about the conversation, the US National Security Spokesperson Emily Horne said that “Mr. Sullivan underscored that the U.S. will support the peace process with a robust and regional diplomatic effort, which will aim to help the two sides achieve a durable and just political settlement and permanent ceasefire.”

“Mr. Sullivan also made clear the United States’ intention to review the February 2020 U.S.-Taliban agreement, including to assess whether the Taliban was living up to its commitments to cut ties with terrorist groups, to reduce violence in Afghanistan, and to engage in meaningful negotiations with the Afghan government and other stakeholders,” the statement further read.

On other hand, Hamdullah Mohib also released a statement on Twitter about the conversation and said: “In my phone call with my US counterpart Jake Sullivan, I reaffirmed that Afghanistan remains committed to our foundational partnership with the United States and we will work closely together on security, peace, counter-terrorism and regional engagement.”

“We agreed to work toward a permanent ceasefire and a just and durable peace in a democratic Afghanistan capable of preserving the gains of the past two decades, protecting the rights of all Afghans, and continuing the reforms,” he added.

It must be remembered that one of the key agreements of US-Taliban deal was the significant reduction of violence but the never-waning cycle of violence never slowed down and thousands of Afghan security forces personnel were killed in last few months.
