A missile fired accidentally at an Iranian warship , “Konark”, during naval exercises killed 19 Navy personnel and wounded 15 others.

The incident happened at a time when tensions between Iran and the United States continue to deteriorate in the Gulf waters.

According to Iranian media and the army, the accident took place near Bandar Jask on Sunday afternoon.

The state TV channel reported that the accident happened when Konark was returning to a target during exercises when it was hit by a missile fired at the target.

The Armed Forces said in a statement without elaborating that the Konark warship had crashed during exercises.

According to AFP, Tasnim news agency said in its English tweet that Konark was hit by a missile fired from another Iranian warship.

The injured Navy personnel have been shifted to hospitals in Sistan and Baluchistan province.

Muhammad Mehran Amini Fard, head of the province’s medical university, told the semi-official news agency ISNA that two injured officials were in critical condition.
