Four coal miners were killed on Saturday in two separate incidents in the Dukki and Chamalang coalfield areas of Balochistan, officials said.

Police said the victims, all Afghan nationals, were working in the mines when the accidents occurred.

In the first incident, a coal mine in Dukki collapsed after a landslide, killing two miners identified as Zainullah and Subhanullah.

In a second accident in the Chamalang area, two miners died of suffocation caused by the accumulation of methane gas inside the mine. Their bodies were later recovered and shifted to a nearby hospital.

Chief Mines Inspector Rafiqullah said both the Dukki and Chamalang mines had previously been sealed due to poor safety standards but were reopened illegally. He said cases have been registered against the mine owners for violating mining regulations.

Mining accidents are common in Balochistan, where weak enforcement of safety laws, outdated machinery, and lack of oversight frequently lead to fatal incidents.

Experts and human rights groups have repeatedly urged the government to improve working conditions for miners, while labour unions say Pakistan must adopt international safety standards to prevent further deaths.
