The Balochistan government held a controversial press conference in Quetta, presenting a young woman from Turbat, allegedly named Adeela, as a potential suicide bomber who had been caught before she could carry out her “mission.” The event was led by government spokesperson Shahid Rind and Member of Balochistan Assembly Farah Azeem Shah, who presented Adeela as a significant threat to Balochistan’s security.
The Balochistan government’s claims have been met with skepticism. Baloch journalist Kiyya Baloch, in a post on X, referenced BLA’s recent ‘Operation Herof’ and questioned the validity of the government’s accusations. He wrote that the real suicide bombers carried out attacks across 11 districts of Balochistan in one day. He said that the woman paraded as a bomber had in fact eloped and married against her parent’s wishes. Kiyya further explained that Adeela had contacted her parents to inform them of her decision not to return home, which allegedly led to her being misrepresented as a ‘suicide bomber’ who had run away to join the Baloch ‘pro-independence’ groups.
It should be noted that earlier this month, a police alert had warned of a female suicide bomber entering Quetta, with Adeela’s name mentioned in the report. However, journalists in Quetta raised concerns about the selective nature of the press conference, with only a few reporters invited. It has raised questions about the transparency of the government’s claims.
This is not the first time Baloch women have been accused of involvement in suicide attacks. In previous incidents, women from Kech and Quetta were similarly detained and presented as potential attackers, only to be released after public outcry and lack of evidence.
