A rare sighting of a gray whale was recorded off the coast of Balochistan’s Gaddani beach, bringing excitement and hope to the local fishing community. The whale, estimated to be 100 feet long and 50 feet wide, weighing over 150 tonnes, represents a potentially significant population of similar whales in the region.

This event is particularly noteworthy as it marks one of the few occasions a live whale has been observed in its natural habitat, contrasting with the more common sightings of beached marine life along Balochistan’s shores.

The coastal waters of Balochistan are recognized for their rich and diverse aquatic life, attributed to the area’s relative tranquility and minimal pollution. However, this ecosystem is threatened by excessive trawling by local and foreign fishing vessels, which indiscriminately capture fish with vast nets, endangering marine species and the livelihoods of local fishermen.

Despite the challenges posed by unregulated fishing practices, the government has yet to take effective action to protect the Baloch Sea—a term used by locals for the part of the Arabian Sea that borders Balochistan—and its inhabitants.
