Unemployment and drought have cast a dark shadow over several regions of Western Balochistan that is taking in hundreds of families in its fold. As employment brings people to their knees, the drought threatens the local crops and portends a possible famine.

According to Sunni Online, a media house based in Western Balochistan, various regions are plagued by unemployment and drought.

The ratio of unemployment in Sistan Balochistan is 12.8 percent. According to government records, about twenty cities, including Sarawan, Pahra, Zabul, Seeb, Suran, Hairmand, Zahk, Sarbaz, and Hoztha have the highest unemployment rate since the 1990s.

Earlier, the officials in the Northern region considered drought, famine, dust storms, and water shortage as primary reasons for unemployment.

Hamun is the largest town — home to 45,000 people scattered in 130 villages comprising a total area of 5000 sq km — has suffered the most due to water shortage, famine and drought.

However, the locals claim that 40 percent of the population is unemployed, and people continue to migrate to other cities like Zahedan, Yazd, Rafsanjan, Kirman, and Tehran to find work.
