Expressing deep concern over the situation in Afghanistan, the World Bank has suspended financial support to Taliban-ruled Afghanistan.

The World Bank has stopped aid to Afghanistan, saying it is “deeply concerned” about the situation in the country after the Taliban seized power and especially the prospects for women, a bank spokesperson told media.

“We have paused disbursements in our operations in Afghanistan and we are closely monitoring and assessing the situation,” the official said.

The World Bank’s spokesperson said that “we are deeply concerned about the situation in Afghanistan and the impact on the country’s development prospects, especially for women.”

According to the bank’s website, the World Bank has more than two dozen development projects ongoing in the country and has provided $5.3 billion since 2002.

This development comes a few days after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) suspended payments to Afghanistan.

The US, last week said it would deny the Taliban access to the country’s gold and cash reserves, most of which are held overseas.
