The former secretary general of United Nations and Nobel peace laureate, Kofi Annan has died at the age of 80 on Saturday.

According to the details received by TBP Web news desk, The former UN secretary general Kofi Annan has died at the age of 80 after an illness, family announced on Sunday.

The news was announced by Kofi Annan foundation and on his official Twitter account as well.

According to the statement released by the foundation, the Nobel laureate passed away “after a short illness, in hospital Bern, Switzerland. His wife Nane and their children Ama, Kojo and Nina were by his side.”

The statement by foundation added that Annan, who succeeded Boutros Boutros-Ghali as UN leader, was a “son of Ghana and felt a special responsibility towards Africa”.

Current Secretary-General of the UN Antonio Guterres said at the news, “In many ways, Kofi Annan was the United Nations. He rose through the ranks to lead the organisation into the new millennium with matchless dignity and determination.”

Many leaders has expressed deep sorrow and praised and hailed Annan for his courage, wisdom and service for humanity.
