A landslide at a coal mine in Harnai district, Balochistan, killed one miner and injured two others on Thursday.
According to Levies officials, the deceased miner has been identified as Mohammad Wali, a resident of Zardhalo, while the injured—Hazrat, from Khanozai, and Dawood Khan, from Zardhalo—were rescued and transported to a nearby health facility.
Rescue teams retrieved the miners from the collapsed site and transported the deceased miner’s body for legal formalities before handing it over to his family.
It is important to note that Balochistan’s coal mining sector has been plagued by frequent accidents due to poor safety regulations. In 2024 alone, 82 miners lost their lives in 48 separate incidents, highlighting ongoing concerns over hazardous working conditions.
Labor unions and workers’ rights organizations attribute these fatalities to inadequate safety measures and the use of substandard equipment, calling for urgent reforms to improve conditions in the industry.
