A total of 82 miners lost their lives in 48 coal mine accidents across Balochistan in 2024, highlighting the dire safety conditions within the industry.
According to official records from the Minerals Department, the incidents—which included toxic gas leaks, landslides, and trolley collisions—occurred from January to December 27 across various coal-mining regions. In addition to the fatalities, over 60 miners sustained injuries.
The worst-hit areas were Dukki, Shahrag, Machh, and Quetta. Shahrag alone accounted for 20 incidents, claiming the lives of 37 workers.
Officials claim that investigations were conducted into six major accidents, leading to legal action against three department officials. “Charges of negligence were filed, and arrests were made,” the statement read.
The recurring fatalities underscore the urgent need for stricter safety measures to protect the lives of coal mine workers in Balochistan.
