In the Chaman district of Balochistan, a protest against the government’s stringent visa policies at the Afghan border escalated into violence, resulting in two deaths.
Local ‘lighris’ were reportedly demonstrating against the strict visa regime and what they perceive as inadequate security arrangements. The protest, marked by the burning of tires in front of the Frontier Corps camp, drew scores of participants.
The situation intensified when the Frontier Corps reportedly resorted to live fire and tear gas to disperse the crowd. During the ensuing clash with security forces, two protesters were fatally shot, and several others sustained injuries. The injured have been transported to a nearby hospital, where they are said to be in critical condition.
Following the incident, a substantial police force arrived to secure the area. Despite their presence, tensions in the district remain high.
