Baloch students took to the roads to demand for a University in Gwadar, the flagship port of China’s multi-billion dollar project China Pakistan Economic Corridor.
According to sources, hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets to demand for the establishment of a university in Gwadar, a highly militarised zone. Hundreds of Baloch male and female students along with social and political activists, carrying banners and placards demanding educational rights for the students of Balochistan, marched on the main roads of Gwadar.
“University was already allotted to Gwadar four years ago, but the current provincial government is opposing the establishment of a university in Gwadar.” Altaf Baloch a protester told the TBP.
On the other hand Senator Kauda Babar of Gwadar, walked out from the senate during the budget session chanting slogans of “Gwadar needs university”, opposition senators also walked out along with Kauda Babar to show solidarity with students of Gwadar.
Previously Aslam Bhutani, a member of Pakistan’s National Assembly from Lasbela, accused Jam Kamal government of being the biggest hurdle against establishment of university in Gwadar, saying that “they have stopped the funds.”
Similarly on social media activist have used #GwadarNeedsUniversity hashtag and showed solidarity to the students of Gwadar.
President of Baloch National Movement UK Zone, Hakeem Baloch in a tweet said “This is a clip from Gwadar Balochistan, where locals are protesting & demanding for an university. Despite the claims from Pakistani establishment of developing Gwadar rapidly, people of Gwadar are always on streets for water & electricity or for education.”
Former chairman of Baloch Students Action Committee, Dr. Nawab Nawab said “Huge no of people protest due to unavailability of university in Gwadar. Education is basic right of everyone, no one should be deprived of. University in Gwadar will most probably boost the literacy rate of area.”
