The district police chief of Sayeed Abaad , Gen. Syed Nazrab Shah Hashemi, has been killed during the clashes with the Taliban militants in central Maidan Wardak province.

At least 10 policemen were killed in clashes with Taliban fighters in the central Afghan province of Wardak, officials said on Sunday.

Provincial governor’s spokesman Abdul Rahman Mangal confirmed the incident and said a group of Taliban militants launched coordinated attacks on security posts in Syedabad district late on Saturday night.

The Taliban set fire to a government building in Wardak’s Sayeed Abad district and killed the district police chief along with nine other policemen on Saturday night, a senior police official told reuters.

Abdul Rahman Mangal said that Taliban raided some civilian houses and also destroyed Police checkpoints.

Mangal further added that the Taliban militants have also suffered casualties during the clashes but the exact number has not been ascertained so far.

He said the attack has been repulsed by the security forces and the security of the district is under full control of the national defense and security forces.

A statement from the Taliban`s main spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, said the insurgents had taken the centre of Sayeed Abad and all surrounding security checkpoints, killing numerous members of the security forces and seizing weapons, ammunition and vehicles.

Maidan Wardak is among the relatively volatile provinces in Central parts of the country where the Taliban militants are active in some of its remote districts and often carry out attacks against the security forces and government institutions.
