A coal miner reportedly lost his life following a landslide in a mine in Harnai, district of Balochistan, on Saturday.

According to Levies, the miner, identified as Lal Badshah, was buried under debris caused by the landslide. Rescue teams swiftly arrived at the scene, retrieved his body, and transported it to the Rural Health Center Shahrag.

After the necessary formalities were completed, his body was handed over to his fanily. Lal Badshah was a resident of Upper Dir in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

This incident highlights the ongoing safety concerns in Balochistan’s coal mining industry, where fatal accidents are unfortunately common due to inadequate safety measures. Over the years, hundreds of miners have lost their lives or been injured in such accidents.

Balochistan holds significant coal reserves, with more than 256 million tonnes found across districts like Quetta, Bolan, Harnai, Loralai, and Dukki. Despite this, the region’s coal mining industry continues to operate with little regard for worker safety. The Pakistan Central Mines Labour Federation reports that over 100,000 workers are employed in Balochistan’s coal mines. However, the lack of proper security arrangements leads to numerous fatalities and injuries each year.
