Security measures have been tightened across various parts of Balochistan ahead of the anniversary of General Aslam Baloch, former leader of the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), and his companions.

The Pakistan Railways Department announced the cancellation of the Quetta-to-Peshawar Jaffar Express train, citing security concerns. A statement issued by railway authorities confirmed that passengers of the canceled train would receive a full refund. However, the Chaman Passenger Train will operate as scheduled from Quetta to Chaman.

In Nushki, internet services were suspended in Ahmedwal and surrounding areas due to security risks. Meanwhile, increased military movements have been observed in Lasbela, Khuzdar, and Makran.

Background

The anniversary commemorates the death of General Aslam Baloch and five of his comrades — Commander Karim (Sigar), Fidai Babar Majeed (Farid), Akhtar Baloch (Rustam), Taj Mohammad Marri (Sardaro), and Amanullah (Sadiq)—  who were killed in a suicide attack in Afghanistan in 2018.

In 2022, on this occasion, the BLA carried out large-scale attacks across Balochistan, reportedly causing significant casualties among Pakistani military personnel.

Earlier this year, on Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti’s death anniversary, the BLA launched “Operation Herof,” which included a suicide attack and a temporary seizure of the Pakistan Army’s headquarters in Lasbela.

Given the historical significance and past escalations associated with this date, authorities are on high alert to prevent any potential incidents.
