“If this nation is to be wise as well as strong, if we are to achieve our destiny, then we need more new ideas for more wise men to read more good books in more public libraries.” – John F. Kennedy, 35th President of USA

Balochistan is currently facing socio-political challenges and a deteriorating educational system. Despite being rich in mineral resources, the province lacks an adequate number of educational institutions and public libraries. In the capital city of Quetta, there are only four public libraries, all of which lack proper facilities. The Quad-e-Azam Library, commonly known as the Provincial Public Library, serves as a record of all provincial public libraries. Unfortunately, corruption has infiltrated the Quad-e-Azam Public Library, resulting in a lack of basic amenities and a negative impact on students’ well-being. The behavior of the library staff towards students is often hostile and disrespectful, creating an unfavorable learning environment.

There is a significant need for books in the Quad-e-Azam Library, as many original books are stored away and not displayed for students. These books are being sold in bookshops around Quetta, as I personally witnessed when I purchased a book from Kabeer Building in Quetta, bearing the stamp of the provincial library of Balochistan. The book section of the library mainly consists of low-quality books, as the original ones have been replaced with cheaper alternatives. This situation is disheartening and reflects poorly on our nation. Neither the stakeholders nor the students have adequately addressed the insufficient availability of books. Allowing books from public libraries like Quad-e-Azam Library to be affected by corruption is a grave offense. The provincial government must recognize that the prosperity of Balochistan depends on the availability of books and public libraries.

The mistreatment of students at the entry gate of Quad-e-Azam Public Library in Quetta is a distressing issue. Students are repeatedly asked to show their membership cards, sometimes more than a hundred times a day. Despite having valid cards, they are treated poorly and made to feel unwelcome. Instead of finding mental relaxation, students are mentally exhausted due to the disrespectful behavior of the library administration. Many students have cancelled their memberships at Quad-e-Azam Library due to mistreatment and lack of proper facilities. The library administration must address this issue and revise its policies to ensure a better experience for students. By valuing our public libraries and prioritizing the well-being of students, we can work together to achieve a promising future.

It is the responsibility of every student to advocate for a better atmosphere at Quad-e-Azam Library in Quetta. The authorities in Balochistan must pay close attention to the functioning of public libraries. Progress and prosperity in the province cannot be achieved unless we recognize the value of public libraries and ensure their proper functioning. The government should provide necessary facilities to students, particularly at Quad-e-Azam Library in Quetta. There should be mechanisms in place to monitor the functioning of public libraries and ensure proper utilization of their annual budgets throughout the province. We can learn from the model of Western nations in this regard.

The 21st century is characterized by revolutionary advancements in artificial intelligence, inventions, and rapid globalization. The world is moving towards a new era, and nations that prioritize education will thrive in this changing order. Neglecting the educational environment will put nations at a disadvantage. The focus should not only be on schools, colleges, and universities but also on public libraries. These libraries are invaluable assets to a nation, serving as havens for learning, creativity, a brighter future, and a peaceful environment.
