The Pakistani media has quoted the Iranian officials in Islamabad condemning the attack on the Pakistani security forces in Panjgoor that left at least nine people dead, even though the attack was carried out in Kech. The Iranian officials reportedly said that the two countries are victims of the ‘evil phenomenon’ of terrorism.

According to Pakistani media reports, the Iranian Embassy in Islamabad issued a statement on Thursday, condemning the attack on Pakistani forces in Mand, Panjgoor. The Baloch “pro-independence” group Balochistan Liberation Front claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Inter-Servces Public Relations (ISPR) also confirmed the attack in a press release, claiming that four soldiers had been killed. However, the BLF claimed that the forces were attacked in Mand, Kech, and at least nine soldiers were killed and multiple wounded.

The Iranian Embassy was quoted as saying that “terrorism is a common problem facing Iran and Pakistan, with both neighbouring countries being victims of that evil phenomenon.” Iranian diplomatic mission in Islamabad had also expressed sympathy with the families of the deceased soldiers.

Pakistani premier Shehbaz Sharif also condemned the attack in a tweet, saying: “The nation pays homage to the sacrifices of their martyred soldiers in the line of duty.”

Pakistani President Arif Alvi and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also condemned the attack.

It is pertinent to mention that the attack in Panjgoor was carried out by the Baloch “pro-independence” group Balochistan Liberation Front. The group claimed that its fighters ambushed a convoy of Pakistani forces in the mountainous region of Shiraz in Tehsil Mand, district Kech, where at least nine soldiers were killed.

BLF spokesperson Gohram Baloch said that the Pakistani authorities have no knowledge of Balochistan’s geography. The security forces were attacked in Tehsil Mand, but the ISPR claims the attack was carried out in Panjgoor. In a similar incident, the forces were attacked in Ormara but the ISPR claimed the attack was carried out at the Pak-Iranian border.

Gohram Baloch said that the Baloch have “vanquished” the Pakistani forces in Balochistan.
