Karachi-based rapper Eva B has become the first Baloch artist to be featured on a billboard in Times Square in New York City. The artist recently became an equal ambassador for the music streaming platform Spotify where she has garnered over 400,000 monthly listeners.
Eva B is a Karachi-based hip-hop artist of Baloch origin. Known for her veiled face and stingy lyrics, the young artist rose to fame when she was featured on the famous Coke Studio track Kana Yari along with Kaifi Khalil and Abdul Wahab Bugti.
Writing in both Urdu and Baloch, the young rapper, who says “Eva” in her name comes from Eve, the first woman, and “B” stand for Baloch, touches a plethora of problems facing society. Before her contract with the Coke Studio, Eva B sang songs like Qalam Bolega (The Pen Shall Speak) and Tera Jism Meri Marzi (Your Body, My Rights).
In an interview with The Guardian, Eva B said she fell in love with hip hop after she got a computer folder of songs by American rapper Eminem. Not knowing the genre of music, she was listening to, she fell in love with the style and flow of the music. She taught herself the basics of rap music and started rapping in 2014.
The first few years of her music career were difficult – being a solo female artist in a predominantly male-dominated society, she was forced to record and upload songs in secret, even after she was signed by the Coke Studio.
Now, Eva B is an ambassador for Spotify with a bright future ahead of her. Her most recent song “Mukhtasar Baatein” is part of Spotify’s program.
It is pertinent to mention that Eva B was also featured on Ms Marvel, a Disney+ and Marvel superhero miniseries focusing on the life of a superhero girl of Pakistani origin.
