At least ten lives have been lost in Dera Bugti in the month of September due to absence of inadequate maternity services in the gas-rich region.

The hospital does not have even a single lady doctor to cater for thousands of births in the town.

According to TBP correspondent, a woman and her unborn child died on their way to a hospital in Rahim Yar Khan, Punjab. The family was traveling to Punjab due to unavailability of maternity services and a lady doctor in Dera Bugti.

The woman, who hailed from Zenkoh in Dera Bugti, died due to loss of blood.

The recent deaths bring the total number of women and infant death to ten for the month of September. In total more than 25 lives have been lost in last seven months.

Most of the deaths have happened while travelling to Punjab to seek treatment as the government has failed to appoint a lady doctor for the resources-rich town for month now.

Dera Bugti is only few kilometres away from the biggest gas reserve in Pakistan, which provides for the majority of Pakistan’s fuel needs.

According to UNDP, 785 out of 100,000 mothers die during pregnancy in Balochistan. However, analysts believe the number has spiked manifolds since UNDP’s last report.
